Keep in Mind

I support a salty expression in a portrait, but you have to love the outcome. Natural lighting and standard facial angles always work best. Photos don't need to be professional by any means, but please give me options and forget the filters.

FAQs

Q: What's the process from start to finish?

A:
Things kick off when you contact me via social media or email. We agree to the medium, size, price, and timeline. I tend to err on the side of over-communication so we have the same expectations. Once you decide to move forward with a commission, I'll ask for multiple photographs. This helps me get the right color and gives me an idea of personality. When the piece is complete or near complete, I'll send you sample photographs to make sure it's what you had in mind. I'll only ask for payment (PayPal is preferred) once you're happy with the piece. Once I receive payment, I ship your artwork.

Q: How long does a custom portrait take?

A:
It depends on the time of year and how many other commissions I have lined up. Contact me for specifics. In general, if I'm not booked solid, you could receive sample photographs as soon as one week after ordering a colored pencil. Oil paintings take weeks, but I will update you as I make progress. The holidays are hectic, so plan well in advance! I don't mind hanging on to photographs and your order in advance.

Q: Do you mat and frame my order?

A:
No. The glass necessary for colored pencil, graphite, and watercolor does not ship well and could easily destroy the artwork. I also don't want to limit your choices. Everyone has their own taste, and I've found that my mats and frames are often swapped out for something that adheres to your personal taste.

Q: So where and how should I frame my art?

A:
You have options! Higher end specialty frame shops will cater to your every need, including unusual sizing (as requested - I default to standard sizes to make this part easier and more affordable). On the other end of the pricing spectrum, you can find frames at Target, Walmart, and other large retailers. There are two things I suggest you splurge on for colored pencil, graphite, and watercolor pieces: acid free mats, backing, and UV resistant glass. It's worth every extra penny. Acid degrades the paper and pigment, as does direct or indirect sunlight. UV resistant glass and hanging your piece away from direct sunlight will vastly improve the longevity of your artwork. Oil paintings only require a frame and hanging out of direct sunlight.

Q: Do you make digital copies?

A:
Yes and no. I take digital photographs to show clients samples, for use on my blog/website, and for social media. I do not mass produce or sell commission pieces. I also don't provide paintings in digital formats for your reproduction. I still retain the copyright to any pieces once sold, so please contact me to discuss replication ahead of time.

Q: Can I share the artwork you've done for me online?

A:
Absolutely, as long as you credit me as the artist and don't make changes. Personal referrals, including social media shares, make up for the vast majority of my commissions, so I appreciate each and every share. Word of mouth is critical for any small business owner.
